Transient settlements can be traced as far back as around 300 AD with more permanent settlements of Lucayan Indians taking shape from 900-1500 AD. Within 25 years of Christopher Columbus’ landfall at San Salvador in 1492 all the Lucayans had been wiped out. The 1600s were a time of turmoil for the islands as they became home to various groups ranging from English puritans to Pirates like Calico Jack and Blackbeard! Finally in the early 1700s order was restored to the islands with many pirates having surrendered while others fled the region. In the 1800s and 1900s The Bahamas enjoyed periods of prosperity related to the US Civil War and Prohibition. When Prohibition ended in 1934, so ended the prosperity.
However, the islands have evolved into a bustling tourism destination and they have enough experience at welcoming guests that life while visiting The Bahamas should be able to provide all the comforts of home, but with better weather!
