St. Vincent & the Grenadines Villa Rentals By CARIBIQUE®

Before colonisation and before the abolition of slavery in the Caribbean, a few escaped and shipwrecked Africans made their home on Saint Vincent and intermarried within the Carib tribe living there. When colonisation threatened their home, the native Carib Indians fought to keep St. Vincent, the island they had called Hairouna, which meant The Land of the Blessed.

Locally referred to as Vincy, the island and its outer islands were colonised in 1719. During the years following settlement the islands passed back and forth between the French and English a number of times. The official language is English, although French patois is also spoken. The currency is the East Caribbean Dollar, however the US dollar is widely accepted on the developed islands.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines comprises 32 islands and cays, nine of which are inhabited; these nine islands are serviced by seven ports of entry, five airports and inter-island ferry service. St. Vincent is home to an active volcano that last erupted in 1979. The volcanic history of the island chain means you can find gold, black and white sand beaches, and an area known as Mesopotamia Valley on St. Vincent features some of the world’s most fertile soil.

Pirates of the Caribbean, I, II and III were all filmed in St. Vincent & Grenadines, as was the movie White Squall. Because of the diversity of the many islands within the chain, a visit to the country can be many holidays in one. Island hopping is a popular way to get more out of your Caribbean holiday, and visiting each of the inhabited islands is a fascinating way to learn about the culture and history of the region.
